The antecedent of the heart motif appears in Roman ornamentation, as a stylization of the laurel leaf, partly as a solitary leaf with two small roots protruding from it, or as a branch with leaves. According to tradition, it was also used as a talisman, which protected its owner from sinister events. It was inherited in folk art during the Gothic period.
